Lenovo has just taken the wraps off the new Motorola-made Moto G line-up for 2016, there's two handsets; the Moto G4 and the Moto G4 Plus, although don't go thinking that latter model is a phablet because of the "Plus" moniker as both devices feature 5.5in 1080p display panels. And yes, in terms of branding as per earlier comments from Lenovo and Motorola reps, the Moto brand continues as part of Lenovo, although it's our understanding that the Motorola team is very much behind the creation of Moto devices, the Motorola brand isn't being worn on the handset or packaging.
Still, these are very much a successor models to the previous Motorola Moto G handsets. Affordability is still a key facet here, but that doesn't mean specs can't creep up! Older Moto G models have stuck with 720p displays, but as QHD and higher resolutions become the norm on flagships, the once flagship standard Full HD 1080p resolution appears to now be old enough to find a place on more wallet-friendly models such as these. On top of that there have been boosts to the processing power, memory and camera hardware. Both handsets do of course run on a stock version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
In terms of design, the duo look quite similar to what has come before from the Moto brand; a pretty sleek shape similar to Google's Nexus handsets, although on the rear panel we noticed there's a nice chamfered shape to the edge as it gradiates from the back to the sides.
Instead of being a bigger phablet, the Moto G4 Plus has a slightly higher-end spec line-up than the regular Moto G4, making it more of a mid-ranger in hardware. It features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 octa-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz and paired with an Adreno 405 GPU, and it's the only member of the new duo to pack a fingerprint scanner on the front. On the back panel the main camera is a 16MP OmniVision PureCell Plus sensor using an f/2.0 aperture (not long ago the territory of flagships!) and 1.3um pixels, while the software features a "Pro" mode with manual controls. On the front is a 5MP camera with a wide-angle 84-degree lens for group selfies and the like.
It's all the rage right now to offer different variants with different RAM and storage setups at different price points, and that's exactly what we're looking at here. The top-end version has 4GB of RAM bringing it right up to flagship level along with 64GB of storage, but it will cost you a bit - however, at present we only have details of the starting price of the base model; for £199 (SIM-free) you get 2GB of RAM with 16GB of storage, while the mid-tier has, you guessed it, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. The Moto G4 Plus will be an Amazon exclusive from mid-June 2016 (at least initially). All models will pack microSD support so you're pretty flush for storage space. Just like the regular Moto G4 the Moto G4 Plus has a 3,000mAh battery with fast charge support, however, the Moto G4 Plus gets a Turbo Charger bundled in when you buy which can provide a six-hour charge in 15 minutes.
The regular Moto G4 has a 5.5in 1080p display, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 CPU just like its beefier brother, but is fixed at 2GB RAM - it also has the 3,000mAh battery with fast charge support but you don't get a fast charger provided. It has 16GB and 32GB storage options but lacks the 64GB top-tier, though both editions have microSD support. The camera setup is a 13MP sensor with 1080p video while the front-facing 5MP selfie cam is the same as the Moto G4 Plus. It has no fingerprint scanner either. The Moto G4 will be available from early-June at Tesco, Argos, and Amazon, starting at £169 for the base model.
