Following evidence of a powerful Galaxy S7 Mini model, it appears Samsung is also almost certainly at work on a new Galaxy S7 series handset carrying the firm's "Active" brand, seen on variants of several recent flagship series - the "Galaxy S7 Active" name appeared in a supported device listing in the changelog for an update to the offical Samsung Level application (unearthed by SamMobile). This is pretty much confirmation that the handset exists, following a coupe of low-level rumours which began circulating last week.
Previously, database listings on Zauba appeared carrying the label SM-G891A (for reference, the Galaxy S6 Active was SM-G890A) and reliable Twitter tipster Evan Blass, aka @evleaks, stated that the in-development codename for the device is Poseidon, with testing taking place at US carrier AT&T.
Things are still in a very early stage as far as rumours are concerned and it's not yet clear how the S7 Active will differ from the regular S7 flagship - earlier Galaxy Active models have provided a "rugged" durable body shell for sporting activities, but have also featured waterproofing when the flagship itself often didn't. Of course, this time round, the S7 flagship and S7 edge variant both have IP67 waterproofing.
However, it has been suggested that the rugged exterior will be prominent, with a very different design from the Galaxy S7 flagship and military grade durability certification and waterproofing at a much higher level MIL-STD-810G. A larger battery cell has also been suggested, but at this point is just speculation.
Similarly there's no details on the internal specs or camera, but broadly, as with previous Galaxy Active editions, we're expecting a similar spec to the flagship, including the Exynos 8990/Snapdragon 820 processor setups (region dependent again, of course).
Naturally we'll keep you posted as more details emerge.
