HTC is working on a new "Hero" phone for early 2016. The HTC O2 will be a 6in QHD phablet powered by a Snapdragon 820

News

We've been hearing a lot of reports recently that suggest HTC is in some mad scramble to produce another handset to compete with Samsung, LG, and Apple following the damp squib that was the HTC One M9.

We've heard there might be a re-launch of the One M9, and we've heard there might be a phone dubbed the "Aero" coming in Q4. We know for a fact a new model is being worked on, because HTC's CEO Cher Wang said as much during a stockholder meeting.

The latest word from the rumour mill (which may, or may not be the same Aero phone with a new name), suggests HTC's next flagship will be known as the HTC O2. The One series moniker, it seems, is gone, in favour of something a bit more punchy and succinct.

And with the new name comes a rather robust spec sheet. The info comes from Chinese website MyDrivers, which claims a next-gen Snapdragon 820 processor will power the device (uing 14nm FinFET semiconductors, no less, just like Samsung's impressive Exynos 7420). It uses 4GB of RAM, four ARM-based Qualcomm "Hydra" cores, and an Adreno 530 GPU.

Other details reportedly include an "all metal" design (no real surprise considering the One series). The use of a Snapdragon 820 implies that rather than appearing inside Q4 (rumours said October 2015) we're now looking at early 2016 when Snapdragon 820 devices generally are expected to ship.

Another set of rumours from Mobile-Dad claim the HTC O2 will be a 6in phablet with a 2560x1440 pixel QHD display (490ppi). The report also alleges 64GB and 128GB storage variants (no 32GB?) and a 20MP primary camera, with a 5MP shooter on the front. HTC has apparently taken the critical tongue-lashing about battery life to heart and is opting for a massive 3,500mAh cell this time round. We're also hearing that BoomSound front-facing stereo speakers will be back, which is great!
