Samsung will begin making its own GPU units for its phones in the coming years, following Apple’s lead.
The process will start off slow, according to reports, with the custom GPUs loaded inside cheaper phones, before a wider roll-out inside the company’s flagship Galaxy phones and tablet devices.
Samsung is following Apple’s lead here; the iPhone maker confirmed it would stop using Imagination Technologies in favor of its own, custom GPU.
The news CRUSHED Imagination Technologies share price in the space of a heartbeat.
Similarly, Samsung will ditch ARM’s GPU technology eventually too. However, Samsung WILL use ARM’s GPUs in its high-end handsets. A move that is likely being done to ensure there are no “issues” with its first run of custom chips.
Furthermore, Samsung’s next-generation GPUs, once finalized, will appear inside other, non-phone products – things like autonomous cars and home appliances.
Exynos Chips AND Beyond!
Samsung is no stranger to the fabrication process; it already makes its own CPUs in the form of the Exynos chipset.
So, the idea of it making its own GPU units isn’t too far fetched. It also probably makes A LOT more financial sense for the company versus buying them from a third-party like ARM.
Samsung’s semiconductor business is also bringing in the company plenty of revenue each quarter as well, so the investment, though still sizeable, will likely be a lot smaller than the one Apple has to undertake.
In other Samsung-related news, word on the street suggests Samsung’s Galaxy X might just retail for almost $2000 once it launches!
