Android P – or, Android 9, as it was also known – is now official, and it’s called Android Pie.
Google released the latest installment of Android yesterday, confirming both the name of the new release (Android Pie), as well as the fact it would soon begin rolling out to Google’s Pixel phones.
This is basically why you get a Pixel phone; you’re always first in line for new updates as soon as they land.
Essential & OnePlus Android Pie Update Coming SOON
Google also confirmed that partners which took part in the Android P Beta Program will also start receiving Android Pie before the end of the fall, as well as those involved in Google’s Android One initiative.
“Devices that participated in the Beta program from Sony Mobile, Xiaomi, HMD Global, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus, and Essential, as well as all qualifying Android One devices,” said Google, “will receive this update by the end of this fall! We are also working with a number of other partners to launch or upgrade devices to Android 9 this year.”
New Android Pie Features
The Android Pie beta was very well received; most agreed that Google was taking things in the right direction.
There is more of an emphasis on gestures inside Android Pie, though these have apparently improved dramatically since the beta days (they weren’t great a few months back).
Google has also developed a significantly improved battery management tool, which is powered by AI and machine learning. This should help improve the battery performance of all Android Pie handsets, old and new.
Android Pie and AI – Yep, More AI To Do Your Thinking For You
Google Assistant is just the tip of Google’s AI plans. The Big G has developed a TON of new AI stuff for Android 9 that is designed to make using the system more intuitive.
“Android 9 aims to make your phone even smarter by learning from you and adapting to your usage patterns,” said Google.
It added: “That’s why Android 9 comes with features like Adaptive Battery, which learns the apps you use most and prioritizes battery for them, and Adaptive Brightness, which learns how you like to set the brightness in different settings, and does it for you.”
Android Pie Release Date: When’s Your Android Phone Getting It?
If you have a Pixel phone, right now – an OTA update is now rolling out.
If you have a OnePlus or Essential phone, or any phone in the Android One program, by the end of the fall.
Everybody else? Well, that’s the million dollar question – hopefully before the close of Q4. But you never know these days. Things can often take longer.
