Nokia – well, HMD – has said all along that it is committed to bringing Android updates to its Nokia phones in a timely fashion. True to form, the company has now confirmed that Android Oreo will be hitting the Nokia 8 very soon.
HMD’s Juho Sarvikas confirmed the news via Twitter. Prior to this, HMD setup an Android Oreo beta programme, where users could test drive the update before the final version was rolled out. Apparently, 2000 users signed up for this.
When is “soon” though? Hard to say; no concrete dates were given, but the use of words implies the update will land well before the end of the year.
If HMD can get the update to its Nokia 8 even sooner than that it would place the company in front of nearly all of its peers in the Android space, including Samsung, LG, OnePlus, and HTC.
Android updates and the speed at which they happen are one of the most divisive things about the Android space.
Established brands like Samsung that pull in billions per quarter still cannot get updates out in a timely fashion, so Nokia’s commitment to this shows the company views timely updates as a big value injection for its customers.
In fact, the only way to ensure you get access to Android updates as soon as they’re ready is to use a Pixel phone. This, for me, is the main reason I have used Nexus, then Pixel phones over the past five years.
Nokia has a bunch of Android phones out now as well, so here’s hoping they will all receive similar treatment and get Android Oreo before the year’s out.
