Pete Lau – OnePlus CEO – has outlined why his company decided not to bring wireless charging to the OnePlus 5T

The OnePlus 5T is official and will launch, in New York, very soon. The handset, which was rumoured for AGES and leaked plenty of times, should be a big improvement on what came before. However, it will not feature wireless charging abilities.

Why no wireless charging? Pete Lan outlined two reasons why the OnePlus 5T will not feature wireless charging, and they are as follows:

  • Reason 1: Wired quick charging solutions like ours clearly outshine wireless on quantitative measures. Just plug your device in, and Dash Charge produces 20 watts of power, reliably giving a day’s power in half an hour.
  • Reason 2: Dash Charge gives you enough power for the day with just one charging session. All you need is the Dash Charge cable and adaptor to consistently power your device at a superior rate. It doesn’t matter whether you’re gaming or streaming video. Dash Charge stays cool and power efficient.

So there you have it; OnePlus made the executive decision, based on the fact that the 5T has fast charging abilities AND Dash Charge, that adding wireless into the mix as well would be, well… merely an experiment in decadence.

This decision will almost certainly be debated endlessly on forums and online for months to come. But it is nice to hear the thoughts of a CEO tech company and why things are the way they are – it’s pretty refreshing, actually.

Also – wireless charging is pretty slow, especially when compared to Dash Charge and Quick Charging. Yes, you have to use a plug with these methods, but who cares if it gets done quickly, right?

Personally, I’ve never really been a massive advocate of wireless charging. I’ve had phones that have had it and seldom used it. You might be different, obviously, and could argue it would be nice to at least have the option, but OnePlus appears to have made its mind up on the matter.

Wonder whether wireless charging will make it to the OnePlus 6?
