Foldable Phones are coming, and Samsung and LG will be leading the charge…

The Samsung Galaxy X has been a huge talking point for the best part of 12 months now. The reason for this is simple: it is said to be Samsung’s first, truly flexible Android phone.

And, no, I’m not just talking about the corners of the display; these handsets will flex and bend like paper – a feat of engineering considered impossible just two-to-three years ago.

Imagine a passport-sized device that opens up, like a book, to reveal a larger internal display and you’re on the right page for what Samsung is apparently planning for Q3 2017.

But it’s not just Samsung. LG is also said to be working on a similar device that it will bring to market during Q3/Q4 2017.

Samsung is still apparently in the should we/shouldn’t we phase with its handset. The company is apparently unsure about the marketability and profitability of this style of phone.

Personally, I think something like this would be a huge deal for consumers and whatever brand managed to get the first handset of this kind to market.

Still… it is rather unclear how these foldable phones will actually work on practice. How will the battery unit work, for instance, or the internal components? The design changes to bring to light many, many questions.

Concepts for handsets like this have been doing the rounds since as early as 2008. But it is only now, nine years later, that component technology has finally caught up with the aspiration’s of designers.

Make no mistake, these flexible phones will be truly unique in the phone space and, if successful and well executed, drive perhaps the biggest shake-up to mobile design since the release of the original iPhone in 2007.

Now it’s just a toss-up between LG and Samsung to see who gets to market first…

My money’s still on Samsung.
