Snapchat is getting completely rebuilt for Android in a bid to attract more users, fix current problems with app

Snapchat has confirmed that is completely rebuilding its Android app in a bid to attract more users on the world’s biggest mobile platform.

Snapchat confirmed the news in its recent Q3 earnings call, where the company admitted it had made a myriad of mistakes with the Android version of its app.

The company highlighted fragmentation as one of the key issues as to why its Android app sucks. There are so many hardware variants out there, according to the company, it is next to impossible to make one app that suits all.

Snapchat was used on 60,000 different Android models in 2017. The company’s big challenge in 2018 is making an app that fits and works on all types of Android phone. And this is harder than it sounds apparently, so the company is investing accordingly.

The new, redesigned version of Snapchat will address issues with load times, overall performance, and Snapchat’s effect on battery life, which at the moment is pretty bad. Beyond this, Snapchat for Android pales in comparison to the version on iPhone. A renewed focus on this aims to fix this is the near future.

Snapchat Focus For 2018

Where to next? Well, once the company has sorted its rubbish Android application, it will be drilling down on user growth, notably on Android, content, and Augmented Reality.

There was no mention of a time frame for this redesigned application, but the company highlighted that is already making improvements to Snapchat for Android; camera load speed is up 20%, for instance, and crashes are now at an all-time low.

We’ll keep you posted on developments around this new app.
