Sony has revealed a new phablet with a "borderless" display

Paul Briden

Despite the firm's struggle to gain attention, Sony has launched another member of the Xperia X series, this time a phablet model as the Xperia XA Ultra. This is a troubling time for the company as senior execs have previously stated that if the mobile arm of its business doesn't do well in 2016 it will probably be sold off, and this year is going to be extra challenging too as we've seen some of the hottest competition for some time from its rivals; Samsung's Galaxy S7 series, the forthcoming Galaxy Note 6, the LG G5, Huawei P9 and P9 Plus, and even the HTC 10, which while not perfect, is easily the best phone HTC has produced for a long time and may pull the Taiwanese firm out from its own hazardous predicament which, until now, has not been too dissimilar to Sony's.

The Xperia XA Ultra sits in the borderline territory between an upper-tier mid-ranger and a lower-tier high-end handset, it features a 6in display using the firm's own Bravia technology branding, and the implementation here Sony is referring to as "borderless" - certainly on the two longer sides that does seem an appropriate moniker as it's as close to an edge-to-edge setup as we've seen anywhere else. On the front there's also a Sony Exmor RS 16MP camera sensor with OIS and LED flash, while the rear camera is a 21MP Exmor RS sensor with hybrid autofocus. The processor is a little different - a MediaTek octa-core MT6755 64-bit CPU with 3GB of RAM, while storage is taken care of via 16GB onboard and microSD support for cards up to 200GB. The handset has a 2,700mAh battery cell and runs Android Marshmallow.

Sony has said the handset will be available globally but is yet to announce any pricing details, but there will be three colour options in black, white, and "Lime Gold". Dimensions are 164 x 79 x 8.4mm and it weighs in at 202g.
