Apple has banned the Genius Media App from its App Store… but you can still install it on your iPhone

Apple recently took down the Genius Media App, a versatile media app that has become rather popular of late. The removal of the app from the App Store is annoying and has likely irked a fair few iPhone users.

The Genius Media App can be used to run Kodi, likely why Apple banned it, but there is a way to install it on your iPhone and, best of all, it doesn’t require you to jailbreak your iPhone.

Why did Apple ban this app? Simple: Kodi is rather controversial, in that, you can – and people do – use it illegally. Things like streams of HBO content, films that are still in the cinema and anything that Sky owns like sports and TV shows are all available via add-ons but all are illegal.

The first instances of court cases have been brought against people using Kodi illegally. Just like Pirate Bay before it, Kodi is now officially on the radar of copyright infringement legal eagles, so you can expect to see many more cases in the near future as well as ISP blocking and everything else in between.

Apple is also pretty consistent in its approach to what it allows on its platform and what it doesn’t. Basically, the general rule of thumb is this: if you buy anything on Apple’s devices Apple has to make money from it; if it doesn’t, Apple stops it or blocks it.

This is what happened with Genius Media; it pulled potential revenue away from Apple’s App Store and iTunes. Apple doesn’t like this, hence the ban.

This method is a little shady, however, so those that go for it do so at their own risk.

The site, known as Chiaseacc, is a foreign language site but don’t worry – you don’t need to read anything. The site has links for all the latest builds of Kodi (Kodi 16.1, 17, or 18).

This method, according to Kodi Tips, works on both iOS 9 and iOS 10.

“From what we can tell,” said the report, “this website is using their enterprise Apple account to distribute valid tokens for the app. Think of it like a company developing an app and handing out tokens to those who help beta test.”

Follow These Steps To Install Genius Media App on iPhone

  • Visit this web page.
  • Scroll down until you see the three options to download Kodi like the screenshot below.
  • Click download on the version you want.
  • Click the home button to return back to your home screen. You should see a new app icon installing.
  • When it is done, you will have an icon for Kodi. When you click on it, you may get the message “Untrusted Enterprise Developer – iPhone Distribution: CVT MEDIA COMPANY LIMITED has not been trusted on this iPhone. Until this developer has been trusted, their enterprise apps will not be available for use.”
  • On your iPhone, navigate to Settings > General > Device Management > CVT MEDIA COMPANY LIMITED > Trust “CVT MEDIA COMPANY LIMITED” > Trust

And… you’re done.

Alternatively, if you don’t fancy messing around with you iPhone, you could pick up a Kodi box online. These devices are super cheap and easy to setup. I recently reviewed a bunch of Kodi Boxes and you can see my findings in this Best Kodi Boxes Guide.
