Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus prototype pictured with axed dual-camera

You may have heard by now that the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have launched. For a while during the rumour phase ahead of said launch, there was talk of at least one of the handsets packing one of those nifty dual-sensor cameras that are currently all the rage, adorning the likes of the LG G6, iPhone 7 Plus, Huawei P9/P10, and Huawei Mate 9, amongst others.

However, prior to the unveiling it turned out this wasn't true. For whatever reason, Samsung had scrapped the idea of fitting a dual-camera on the Galaxy S8 series, and, sure enough when the phones did launch in late March there were only single-sensor camera setups to be found.

Now however, photos have leaked showing what appears to be a prototype model of the Galaxy S8+ equipped with dual-camera optics on the rear. Word from the rumour mill fairly regularly suggests that the likes of Samsung and Apple build multiple prototype devices with different features during the development process. They're each tested, and then a final production model is decided upon.

This handset which has been caught on camera is likely one such prototype that was used to test out the dual-camera hardware. Interestingly this model also doesn't appear to have a fingerprint scanner, or at least, it's not in the rear location we saw on the production model.

That also begs the question - could this model use the design we keep hearing about with a fingerprint scanner under the display glass?

The leaked images are naturally causing a bit of a hubbub on the web. Speculation is rife that we could see Samsung launching some kind of "Special Edition" Galaxy S8+ with these features, which isn't entirely outside the realms of possibility given Samsung's past love of multiple Galaxy S flagship variants, such as the Galaxy Active variants.

Additionally, however, there's plenty of talk that these features may make their way onto the Galaxy Note 8 later this year
