The PS4 is the biggest selling console on the market right now. That might change later on this year with the arrival of Microsoft’s Xbox One X, but for now, Sony is doubling down on its effects to improve its platform.

The next major update for the PS4 platform – PlayStation 4 System Update 5.00 – is destined to land very soon. Leaks have revealed quite a bit about what to expect from the update once it lands later this year.

The PlayStation 4 System Update 5.00 is currently available in beta, though for most people, it is probably better off waiting for the final release to land, as beta builds are always a little squiffy.

For the most part, the update is mainly focussed on polishing existing features, tweaking things, and adding in lots of little updates. The net result, however, should be a rather impressive update for the end user.

Here’s what you can expect to see in the final build of the PlayStation 4 System Update 5.00 when it drops (via BGR):

  • New family/child account management, called “Family on PlayStation Network,” lets you customize permissions, assign a family “manager” and monitor child account activity.
  • PSVR will display spectator comments during broadcasting.
  • PS4 Pro will get Twitch streaming at 1080p and 6fps.
  • Share music via the PS4’s messages feature.
  • Ability to leave multiple message groups at the same time.
  • Option to disable pop-up notifications during streaming content like TV and movies.
  • Option to turn off message previews in pop-ups.
  • New pop-up notification color option, so you can choose either white (default) or black.
  • Notifications and a clock now appear under the Quick Menu, too.
  • Quick Menu also adds the ability to leave parties.
  • Virtual surround sound 5.1ch and 7.1ch now compatible with PSVR.
  • New tournament bracket viewer.

Because the PlayStation 4 System Update 5.00 is now in beta, it likely means it will appear at any time now, so if you’re hungry for some new features for your console, take solace in the fact you will not have to wait too long for it to arrive.
