It’s the first smart speaker with a screen – meet Amazon's Echo Show

In the last year smart speakers powered by AI assistants have become more popular. Amazon was the first to get into the game with its Echo speaker, which is powered by Amazon’s Alexa AI. After Amazon, came Google, with its Google Home speaker powered by Google’s Assistant AI. And now it looks like the smart speaker industry might really be heating up. There are strong rumors that Apple will unveil its own “Siri Smart Speaker” as soon as next month.

Matter of fact, rumors have been pointing to the Siri Smart Speaker’s differentiating factor of including a screen users can view and interact with. However, if that was Apple’s plans for their smart speaker, they’ll be upset that Apple has beaten them to the punch. That’s because the company has released its newest Echo product–the Echo Show. The new smart speaker features a 7in touchscreen built in. But that’s not all. Here’s everything you need to know about Amazon’s new Echo Show.

Amazon Echo Show: What Is It?

It’s Amazon’s newest Echo smart speaker–but this one has a built-in 7in touchscreen (that’s where the “Show” in its name comes from: it shows you things).

Amazon Echo Show: How Is It Different Than A Normal Echo?

The normal Echo and Echo Dot smart speakers have no screen—they are strictly audio-only. The Echo Show, on the other hand, has a 7in touchscreen that lets you see things related to your query. For example, if you ask how Apple stock is doing, the Show will bring up the stock chart for AAPL on screen. Or you can ask the Show to show you videos of how to fix a busted kitchen pipe, and the Show will bring up YouTube videos about the subject.

But the Show got even further. It also has a built-in 5MP camera that you can use to make video calls to other people with Shows as well. You can also make voice calls to anyone who has an Echo or Echo Dot.The Show’s skill set is also vastly improved thanks to its camera and touchscreen. The Show is capable of using all the Skills (basically, the Echo equivalent of an app), but it now features hundreds of new skills that take advantage of the camera and touchscreen. For example, now you can have Show pull up the video monitor feed from the baby monitor in the next room (provided the smart baby monitor supports a Show skill). Currently, Amazon says the Show can turn on lights, control thermostats and more with WeMo, Philips Hue, ecobee, and other compatible smart home devices.

Amazon says some of the other touchscreen features of the Show include the ability to watch video flash briefings and YouTube, see music lyrics, security cameras, photos, weather forecasts, to-do and shopping lists, and more.

Amazon Echo Show: Design

The Show is a square speaker that is about 3.5in in depth and 7.4in wide and long. The 7in touchscreen sites at the top of the device, with the speakers below it. It also comes in either black or white.

Amazon Echo Show: Besides The Screen, What Other Hardware Does It Have?

Quite a bit, actually. First lets look at the specs:

  • Size: 7.4” x 7.4” x 3.5” (187 mm x 187 mm x 90 mm)
  • Weight: 41.0 oz. (1170 grams)
  • Display: 7” touchscreen
  • Camera: 5MP
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity: Dual-band Wi-Fi supports 802.11 a/b/g/n (2.4 and 5 GHz) networks. Does not support connecting to ad-hoc (or peer-to-peer) Wi-Fi networks.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity: Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) support for audio streaming from your mobile device to Echo Show or from Echo Show to your Bluetooth speaker. Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) for voice control of connected mobile devices. Hands-free voice control is not supported for Mac OS X devices. Bluetooth speakers requiring PIN codes are not supported.
  • Audio: Dual 2 inch stereo speakers
  • Alexa App: The Alexa App is compatible with Fire OS, Android, and iOS devices.
  • Processor: Intel Atom x5-Z8350 processor for advanced technology and processing capabilities

We already mentioned the 5MP camera that allows you to make video calls, but the Show also includes eight microphones with beam-forming technology, and noise cancellation. This means the Echo Show hears you from any direction—even if you’re standing behind it, and even if music is playing.

Amazon Echo Show: Release Date & Price

Right now the Echo Show is only available for pre-order in the US. There it will cost $229.99USD.

Or you can get $100 off if you buy two together. Pre-orders will ship on June 28, 2017. As for a UK release date, Amazon hasn’t said anything. However, it’s likely to be released in the UK sometime this autumn.
